Has Anyone Used a Spice Mill That Actually Makes Homemade Spice Blends Better? (5 อ่าน)

Hi everyone,

I have been getting more interested in cooking with whole spices lately, and recently I started looking into using a spice mill at home. I usually buy pre-ground spices, but I’ve noticed that the aroma and flavor can sometimes feel less intense after the package has been open for a while.

Because of this, I am thinking about getting a spice mill, but I’m honestly a bit confused and wanted some real advice from people who have experience using one.

I noticed that there are many different types of spice mills available, from simple manual options to electric models. Some are designed for everyday kitchen use, while others are made specifically for grinding harder whole spices and preparing small batches of spice blends.

But my main question is - are they actually useful in real-life cooking?

For example, if someone starts using a spice mill, can they really notice a difference in the flavor and aroma of freshly ground spices, or is it mostly an extra step that doesn’t make much difference?

Another thing I’m wondering about is making homemade spice blends. I like the idea of grinding only the amount I need instead of keeping several opened packets of ground spices in the kitchen. It seems like this could be especially useful for recipes that need cumin, coriander, black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, or other whole spices.

While researching, I also came across Zaica Life while looking at different spice mill options. I’m not promoting anything here - I just noticed their products while comparing options and it made me curious about what other people actually prefer.

My goal is not to become an expert at grinding spices. I simply want something practical that works well for everyday cooking and doesn’t become another kitchen gadget that sits unused.

Some things I would really like to know from experienced people here:

Is a spice mill really worth buying for regular home cooking?

What should I look for when choosing a good spice mill?

Is a manual mill better than an electric one for whole spices?

Does freshly grinding spices actually improve the flavor of homemade spice blends?

Has anyone used a spice mill regularly and noticed a significant difference in their cooking?

I’d also love to know which spices you usually grind yourself and whether you make your own spice blends at home.

If anyone here has been using a spice mill for a while, I would really appreciate hearing about your experience. Was it worth the investment, and would you recommend getting one for someone who cooks with spices regularly?

Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts. I’m sure your suggestions will help others who are also considering trying a spice mill at home.
