How to Take Care of Your Tactical Scope

A tactical scope needs to work perfectly when it matters most. Whether you're at the range, in training, or out in the field, a foggy lens or a loose turret can mess up your shot. Taking good care of your scope helps keep it clear, accurate, and ready to go.

Here are 5 simple tips to help you keep your scope in great shape.

1. Keep It Clean

You should clean your scope after every use or every few hundred rounds. Focus on the lenses, the body, and the mount.

How to Clean the Lens:

Blow off any dust first — don’t wipe a dirty lens or you’ll scratch it.

Use lens cleaner on a microfiber cloth (don’t spray it directly on the glass).

Wipe gently in circles from the center outward.

How to Clean the Body and Turrets:

Wipe the body with a soft, dry cloth.

Use a damp cloth if needed — avoid strong cleaners.

Clean around the adjustment knobs (turrets) so dirt doesn’t mess with accuracy.

How to Clean the Mount and Rings:

Check for dirt or grime, especially after muddy or dusty days.

Make sure screws are tight, but don’t overtighten — use the right tools if you have them.

2. Check Your Zero Often

Tactical shooting can be rough on your gear. Even a small bump can knock your scope off target.

After hard training, matches, or hunting, always recheck your zero.

Bring a small kit to the range: targets, adjustment tools, and any notes or data you need.

Don’t just guess — double-check before you pack up.

3. Watch Out for Weather

Even waterproof and fogproof scopes need a little help in tough weather.

Check rubber seals: If they’re old or cracked, water can sneak in.

Dry it off: After rain or snow, wipe it dry to stop rust or corrosion.

Handle temperature changes: If you go from cold to warm (like from a car to a house), keep your scope in its case to avoid fog.

4. Store It the Right Way

How you store your scope matters — both short-term and long-term.

Short-Term Storage:

Use a padded case or rifle bag.

Keep lens covers on when you're not using the rifle.

Store it somewhere dry and cool — not in a damp basement or hot garage.

Long-Term Storage:

If the scope is off your rifle, keep it in a hard case with moisture packs.

Some shooters slightly loosen the turrets for long storage to take pressure off the springs (optional).

5. Match Care to How You Use It

Different types of shooting need different types of care.

For Close-Quarters (CQB):

Check your scope and mount often — tight spaces and fast movements cause bumps.

Use anti-fog spray or wipes to keep your lens clear during indoor or high-action drills.

For Long-Range or Competition:

Test your turret tracking before matches (try a “box test” to see if adjustments work right).

Check your scope level — even a slight tilt can throw off accuracy.

For Field or Duty Use:

Wipe your scope down daily, even if it looks clean.

Use thread locker (like blue Loctite) on mounting screws so nothing shifts.

Carry a lens pen or cloth with you in case you need a quick clean.

Mistakes to Avoid

Don’t clean your lens with shirts, tissues, or paper towels — they can scratch.

Don’t overtighten the caps on your turrets.

Don’t leave batteries in your scope for storage — they might leak.

Don’t spray cleaner directly on the scope.

Don’t assume "waterproof" means "indestructible" — always treat your scope with care.

Are Some Scopes Easier to Care For?

Yes! Scopes made with high-quality materials — like strong aluminum bodies, good lens coatings, and high waterproof ratings — are easier to clean and last longer.

Final Tip: Take Care of Your Scope Like It Matters

Think of your scope as an important part of your gear, not just an extra. If you keep it clean, check it often, and store it right, it’ll stay sharp and reliable whenever you need it.
