What is a self assessment tax return and who actually needs to file one in the UK? (84 อ่าน)

Hey everyone, I'm trying to get my head around the UK tax system and could really use some clarity. what is a self assessment tax return exactly, and who needs to do a self assessment tax return ? I recently started doing some freelance work on top of my regular 9–5 job, and I keep hearing that I might need to file something with HMRC. From what I understand, the self assessment tax return UK system is how people report income that isn't taxed automatically through PAYE. But it's still confusing. Is it just for the self-employed, or do landlords, investors, and people earning side income from things like Airbnb or crypto also have to file? And what about those who claim child benefit while earning over a certain threshold—do they need to file one too? I don't want to get hit with late fees or miss any deadlines, but there's so much mixed information online. If anyone has gone through the process or knows for sure who qualifies and who doesn't, I'd really appreciate a breakdown in plain English. Also, is it better to use an accountant or just do it myself through the HMRC website? Thanks in advance for any advice!
